Search Engine Marketing vs. SEO

Search Engine Optimization is one piece of the broader area of Search Engine Marketing (SEM). Search engine marketing includes (in addition to SEO), paid inclusion or pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns, like Google Ad-Words. Internet marketing campaigns often employ blogs, affiliate programs, social networking and other methods to build links and further promote traffic to the site.

Paid inclusion plans differ from SEO in that the latter targets "natural" or "organic" search engines results for keyword searches. These are located as some form of "sponsored results" on all major search engines. The advantage of PPC is that the results are instant, whereby organic or natural rankings tend to be more permanent. Paid links disappear once the campaign has run its course.
